First dealing with good. What does makea a good movie,not a classic but a good movie, and this is in my view a personal decision. Not some Leonard Maltin or Roger Ebert spoutings, but one's own personal opinion.
Now what makes a bad movies?
For example Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", at first glance appeared to be a bad movie but when the ending rolls around, what have you got ? Something that still leaves one thinking. So the same for goes for the Evil Dead series of films, at first glance they may appear to be bad movies, but they aren't. Why? Is it the story, or the hideous attempts at special effects? Bad or good, some movies are such a personal experience that it is beyond insulting to suggest that one's personal favorite movies are bad. When one's own tastes are involve, one's personal series of dislikes and likes, one's own boundaries of what is accepted into your own mind, no one from the outside world will ever really understand why someone likes, maybe even loves one movie over another. I personally find it difficult to explain to anyone else in my cirlce of friends in real time why Aliens is one of my four favorite movies. It is so violent, it is scary it is dark and they shoot guns, and people get hurt. I have tried and failed to explain that this movie is not as violent as they believe it to be, and then I have tried to explain what I feel is behind all the darkness, hope, sacrifice, absolute trust and faith in brothers and sisters in arms, fidelity... and still they don't get it. Because I am a teacher at a child development center, people find it harder still to believe that yes, I do go out regularily and shoot my guns, watch "scary" movies and am a gentle and kind person.
Anyways, it is early in the day where I live and I had some time to write a bit.
